BLINDED BY BLOOD
PALMEE'S MISFOETUNE
BEATEN BY LEO KELLY
FINISH IN TWELFTH ROUND
SYDNEY, April 6,
At the Stadium tonight Ambrose Palmer, 12st 831b, was technically knocked out in the twelfth round by the American negro, Leo Kelly, 12st lib, in the presence of a very large crowd.
Palmer boxed with his usual skill and cleverness until the eighth round,, and seemingly had a comfortable points lead. He then received a severe cut under his right eye, and an old wound above his left eye was also opened. From these blood streamed down his face, severely handicapping him and placing him at the mercy of his hard-hitting opponent, who punished the Australian champion as he has never been punished before. Palmer was down for eight in the tenth when he was saved by the bell. He never rallied properly afterwards, and the fight was stopped in the twelfth round and Kelly crowned the winner.
Although it was. recognised that he was meeting a dangerous opponent, Palmer's defeat comes in the nature of a big surprise, as he is considered to be in world class in the cruiserweight division. Had it not been for a recurrence of his old trouble, cuts above the eyes, it is safe to say that his arm would have been raised at the finish. He holds the heavy and lightheavyweight championships of Australia, and his. last previous defeat was by Dave Shade on a foul at Sydney in January, 1934. In the lightheavyweight division he was ranked fourth by "The Ring" for last year, eight places above Kelly.
