Her Excellency Lady Galway paid a visit to the Home of Compassion at Island Bay yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Howard Elliott left Wellington yesterday by the Wanganella for a short business trip to Melbourne and Sydney. ■
The Rev. David Calder, 8.A., Dominion secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, has returned to Wellington. . ;
A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Sir Francis Bell was passed by the Lower Hutt Borough Council last evening. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews) remarked that in addition to his great national service, Sir Francis had always taken a great interest in the borough and especially so during the period of the Government subdivision of its land. His name was perpetuated in Bell Park and Bell Road. Later in the evening the Town Clerk read a letter received from Mr. Cheviot Bell, in which it was stated tiiat one of the last requests made by Sir Francis was that iron seats should be provided out of the funds of his estate for Bell Park. The council accepted the offer with thanks.

The retirement is announced of Dr. Agnes Bennett, who has been medical officer in charge of the Wellington St. Helens Hospital for thirty-two years. The Director-General of Health (Dr. M. H. Watt) has written to Dr. Bennett referring to the long period during which she had been responsible for the medical administration of the hospital, and acknowledging the devoted manner in which she had carried out her duties.
