BUSH FIRES IN GIPPSLAND

SYDNEY, April 1.

Citizens of Melbourne have recently endured a continuous hot spell with the thermometer near the 100 degrees mark on many consecutive days. Sydney's turn came today, when 91.4 degrees were registered—the highest on record for April. Weather authorities state that 90, degrees has been,.reached only four times previously during April.

Bush fires are again ravaging coastal towns in Victoria, chiefly in Gippsland. The sawmilling hamlet-of The Gunyah, in the heart of the Gippsland forest, was completely burnt out today. A large sawmill, twelve cottages, and a boarding-house were reduced to ashes. The inhabitants are homeless, have lost all their belongings,, and'are suffering from smoke blindness.

Bushflres destroyed the plantation of the Forestry Commission at Anglesea. Another sawmill was burned down at Moe, houses were destroyed at Warragul, and in the Cobden district, one man was killed when he was overcome by smoke and lost control of his motorcycle near Forrest
