The damage caused by the hurricane which swept the Manawatu on Sunday, February 1, will cost the Mana-watu-Oroua -Power Board approximately £7000 to repair. Over 95 peri cent, of the damage was caused- by trees smashing the lines, and at yes-] terday's meeting of the board one member aptly put the position when he said that in future settlers would have to choose between electricity and! trees. ■ • . I It was decided to call a conference of the Dannevirke, Central Hawke's Bay, Tararua, Wairarapa, Horowhenua, and Wanganui-Rangitikei Power Boards, the Palmerston North City Council and county councils in the same area, and the Public Works Department and Post and Telegraph Department in order to discuss the situation and present a unanimous request to the Government for amended legislation regarding trees that menace power . lines.
