WELLINGTON RACES

THE SUMMER MEETING

SECOND DAY AT TRENTHAM

IMPROVED LEATHER

(By "Rangatira.")

There was an improvement in the weather for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Trentham today, for though it was still overcast there was no sign of rain in the air, as there was during all yesterday's racing. When the programme commenced, again at 12.45 ■ p.m., the afternoon promised to be most enjoyable for patrons. As a mark of respect to the memory of the late King the flags on the club's building were flown half-mast, and officials and riders again wore black armbands or rosettes. . The track was again in splendid order, providing the opportunity for further fast times. For the off day there was a satisfactory early attendance. The fields were of good, even ■• dimensions, and the racing was keen in the opening events. The betting as.usual was under the established win-and-place system, and running descriptions of the racing were broadcast for the convenience of patrons. Results and notes on the racing to lime of going to press were:— MUNGAROA HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, £200; second horse £40 and third £20 from the stake; 1} miles. I—l—L. H. Gen- . eral Quex and Contract made the early running but Contract took charge at the five furlongs with the rest of the field bunching. Contract just led into the straight from Petrarch, Blue Tiger, Sky Pilot, and Umpire, and after a short fight Contract yielded to Petrarch who beat him by two and ■ a half lengths. Contract easily held second money and the only other place dividend from Blue Tiger by two lengths. Royal Papa was running on fourth, with Sky Pilot next. The pool on this race was several hundred pounds less than on the middle day last year. Time, 2min 9Jsec. (Winner trained by Mrs. A. W. McDonald, Awapuni.) TRIAL PLATE, £200; second horse £40 and third £20 from the stake; 7 furlongs. s—s—H. B. Lorigan's br m Geitel, by Blankraey ll—Goa's Daughter, 4yrs, 8.5 (P. Burgess) 1 I—l—-G. Bur- ■ gess, got up to surprise Reed and to beat his mount by a head. Geitel had been fourth most of the running. The success reintroducefj, a Treutham trainer, H. B. Lorigari's colours after an absence of three and a half years in Australia, and the win was popular despite its being at the best price to date at the meeting. Cheap Money and Turineller beat him away but he/ran through to take charge at the end of a furlong. He was pursued around the turn by Cheap Money, Miss Hushabye, Tunneller, and After Money, with Fracas last, but in the straight After Money threw out a strong challenge along the inner-'and he was all out to hold the mare' at bay by half a length. Shy, though carrying fair support, was at a good price for his \yin in the Camp Handicap. Recitation and Hine Ra made the early running from Violenta, Chief Ranger, and Caen, with Pukeko and Shy in behind them. Crossing to the straight Violenta hit the front but Pukeko then moved up easily to assume charge, with Chief Ranger still going on and Shy coming up on an inner passage. The three fought out the finish, Shy finishing best to win by half a head from Chief Ranger, who beat Pukeko by a neck. After a gap Boomerang and Vinco came next, followed by Abbey Fcalc.
