WAIRARAPA TOURNAMENT

MASTERTON, This Day.
A start was made yesterday afternoon with the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association's annual cHampionship and handicap tournament. The tourney was set down to commence on Anniversary Day, but because of the King's death the start* was postponed until yesterday morning. Ham cailsed further delay until 1 p.m. A number of matches were decided, but more heavy rain at 4.30 p.m. made necessary an abandonment for the day. Championship games resulted: — Men's Singles. First round: J. C Charters "beat <i. McLeod, 9-5; M. L. Lampe beat D. H. Ward, 9-2. Men's Doubles. Second round: E. M. Hodder and.R. R. T. Young beat E. Bidwill and J. Palmers, 9-0; P. Hawksworth and C. H. Bowen beat R. H. Tatham and W., S. Johnston, 9-4. Ladies' Doubles. Second round: Mrs. J. I. Jones and Miss B. Bright beat Misses A. Beetham and A. Wilder, 7-0; Misses P. and J. Betts beat Misses Pearce and B. Baird, 7-1; Mrs. Major and Miss Macassey beat Misses Blundel and Daniell, 7-0; Misses Howe and Whisker beat Misses Carrick and. Pollock, 7-2.
