PLUNKET SHIELD

VISITORS BATTING

WELLINGTON V. OTAGO

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, This Day.

Brilliant sunshine prevailed for the Plunket Shield match between Otago and Wellington at Carisbrook. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on an excellent wicket, Molosrey and Parsloe opening.

' Moloney faced Dickinson, and in the ( first over leg-glanced the fast bowler |to the boundary off a no-ball and the j last ball of the over he square-cut to i the fence in masterly style. A single came from Badcock's first over, the Otago professional swinging dangerously with the assistance of a strong cross-wind. Badcock sent down a maiden and then With the first ball of his next over he beat Moloney under the new lbw rule. Ell partnered Pars-, loe and opened with a single past third man. In Dickinson's next over Parsloe played an uppish shot to where third slip should have been, the ball going to the boundary.' CHANCES GO BEGGING. The Otago captain, Cavanagh, thereupon moved into the gap, but he dropped the next ball, which came right into his hands, Parsloe being ten. Ell soon opened out and several crisp boundary shots brought his score to 2u in 18 minutes. ParslQe was also scoring freely and CO appeared for 38 minutes' play. Dunning relieved Dickinson after he had bowled seven overs for 39 runs, and the last ball of his over was snicked to Elmes at first slip, who failed to hold it. With the third ball of his next over he caught Parsloe with his foot in front. 62—2—25. ELL IMPRESSIVE. O'Brien partnered Ell, who was batling freely and impressively. The total mounted steadily to 92 before Knight took a brilliant one-handed catch at short square-leg. The retiring batsman scored his* 47 runs in 50 minutes, and hit seven 4's. In Dunning's seventh over Ward played all over one and was "skittled." O'Brien reached 10 in thirty minutes and at 13 he gave a chance to Uttley near long-on but the fieldsman failed to sight the ball, though he managed to get his hand on it. The total reached 100 in eighty minutes and ten runs later Smith took over from Badcock, who had bowled unchanged for an hour and a half. He had taken two wickets for 39. Elmes also replaced Dunning (two for 27) at the other end, but the double change to the left-handers was not successful, both batsmen scoring freely. Smith was inclined to over-pitch his deliveries, two overs costing 13 runs before Dickinson was tried again. The change, however, did not appear to be very judicious, for neither bowler troubled the batsmen, who gathered runs steadily. Three more overs by Dickinson saw Smith brought back again, though Elmes continued to trundle indifferently at the other end. One hundred and fifty appeared in 116 minutes. . . At lunch Wellington's score was 156 for four wickets., AFTER LUNCH. ..";.. In the first over after lunch Lamason cut Badcock past third man to the fence and added another couple off the same over. Dickinson's second ball to O'Brien was a good one but his direction for the most part was not good. O'Brien lifted Dickinson into the long field for a couple, and 170 appeared when Lamason slammed Badcock to the square-leg boundary. Lamason reached 40 in 67 minutes by driving Badcock through the covers to the boundary and "three minutes later reached 50. O'Brien reached his 50 in 97 minutes, and in the next over was smartly stumped off Dunning. Blandford was the next Wellington batsman. Scores: — WELLINGTON. First Innings.
