WOODVILLE HORSES
•DAVIS'S STRONG TEAM
(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N;, This* Day. It was expected that Saturday morning would be an interesting one at Woodville, but drenching rain set in about 3 a.m. and it continued to pelt down until after breakfast. There were only four or five horses at the course at- the usual time -for.commencing operations, and three -of them galloped with the lads clad in raincoats.
After breakfast the rain let up and a number of horses were - galloped when the tracks had somewhat improved. The conditions were anything but good, however, and'the times were slow, though better than expected.
Sunder (R. K. Guthrie) and Red Rufus (G. J. Jones) were-the first out, and they were galloped a mile in the blinding rain. They were together all the way, requiring lmin 57 2-ssec for the distance.
Tiritea Jack scampered over five furlongs in lmin 7 2-ssec, and his effort was the only other gallop before breakfast.
F< W. Davis's horses were not worked till later. Karl, who looks well, was sprinted . five furlongs in lmin, ssec, and he moved nicely.
Heritage took a.second longer for,the same distance, but the going was not to his liking. He looks as fit as.it is possible for a horse to be, and under favourable conditions he' should do well at Trentham. Unless; the going is good there is a chance that he will not take .his place in the Trentham. Stakes. ' '
Missal and.Kotou sprinted five furlongs, in lmin 6sec, but ..Senior was restricted to a couple of rounds of strong pace work. Senior looks'; well, and he will have the services of E. W, Savage in the Wellington Cup. .
The Davis stable will have strong representation at Trentham, and Senior, Plato, Karl, Missal, Mandamus, and Heritage were to have left by; float at an early hour this morning.
Missal, Mr. G. M. Curries laniond— Mirabelle II filly, will be having her second start at Trentham,. ■ her 'first haying been at Woodville in December. Mandamus, Mr. W. 'H. Gaisford's high-priced colt, has not been ire long. He was put for some barrier practice last Thursday. . Mala, from H. E... Russell's stable, was sprinted half a mile, picking up Bengal Lancer at the.1 top of the straight. Hitting out boldly, he beat his companion home, being clocked to run the full distance in 51isec—good time under the conditions. . ;
Royal Record, with Martara to carry him along over the last 'three' iurlongs, galloped a mile, and it was not a bad work-out. Confiscation sprinted six furlongs inlmin 20£ sec. ... Additional riders for. ..Ashhiirst.include:—F, Waddell, Confiscation; G. J. Jones, Tiritea Jack; N. Cavaney. (the apprentice from the . Davis , stable), Bumble (probably). '. -, ■~ ■ -"..". '\
