AUSSIE RA IS WELL

NEW PLYMOUTH JOTTINGS

(Special from "Hurry On.") NEW PLYMOUTH, This Bay. Torrential rain fell early on Saturday morning and when the tracks were finally opened for the final gallops of the horses engaged at Ashhurst and Wellington the going was reduced to the state of a quagmire. Despite the conditions, however, some fine gallops were recorded, indicating that local teams have come through the holiday racing well and are in great heart for engagements in the near future. The outside1 of the course proper was used lor all gallops.

Chikara, who was a great disappointment over the holiday circuit, is being given one more chance :to iiiake amends. He- has embarked' upon a course of schooling, and with H: Dulieu in the sadde he jumped four hurdles carefully.

Refresher (Davoren) and Royal Artist (Eley) were impressive over five furlongs in'lmin 6 2-ssec, the first three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. Royal Artist was slow to begin, but made up his ground well and came home strongly to finish ,on terms with the Tea Tray gelding. Royal Artist has improved considerably with his one race at New Plymouth.

Aussie Ra (Davoren) had Glenvane (Pell) as a companion over a mile in a good working gallop, and the pair came home well, the last six furlongs in lmin 22isec. Both, could have improved a lot on this time and Aussie Ra is in wonderful fettle for his Ashhurst Cup engagement and for his racing in the last two days of the Wellington Meeting. He promises to be the favourite for the Ashhurst Cup, a race the stable has won in the past few years with Anolo and The Swell.

Grateful (Davoren) occupied 54$ sec to run his half-mile, but it was a good solo effort, especially as the : Raceful gelding seldom executes sensational trials. He has improved all round since winning- at New Plymouth, and his prospects at Ashhurst look particularly bright.

Bonny Glow (Lorigan) showed she had improved with her racing by easily accounting lor Red Fox (Davoren) over hall a mile in 54 3-ssec. The big Lord Warden filly is a good prospect for the Taranaki autumn circuit.

Joy Box (Davoren) ran three fur-

longs down the back in 40sec without being unduly bustled. She is not without a chance in the maiden event at Ashhurst.

Hinkey Pinkey (Davoren) finished three lengths ahead of Ngatirahiri (Eley) and Davistock (Pell)' over a leisurely-run six furlongs, the last five taking lmin 9 2-ssec. Ngatirahiri was always going well within himself, and, with a race at Ashhurst to sharpen him up, he will be in great heart for the Trial Plate on the second .day at Trentham. The Stratford Cup winner Davistock has freshened up nicely, and will have to be considered in.the Cup events on the coming provincial circuit.

On an improving track.Lady Kyra (Lorigan) showed brilliance in cutting out her.half-mile in 52 4-ssec, It was a fine effort, and indicated that the mare had done well since the holiday meetings. .: ■ • ■

Clessamor (Davoren) and : Tahurangi (Eley) finished together at the conclusion of three furlongs run in 39Jsec. Both went well, and came home strongly.

The two-year-old Winsome Lv (Davoren) was all at sea in the heavy going, and took 42sec for her three furlongs:

The Wellington Cup candidates Silk Sox and Windsoreen were to have been, galloped, as well as Aotppeen, but tha rain deterred their owners froni bringing them in from the country.

H. Dulieu has recommissioned that good Royal Divorce mare Gold Mission, .who looks, well after, her'spell since the .Waverley.'Meeting in October. She does not look as if she will take long to come to;hahd again.

J. Beach will' rid&'"/Aussre':HHa, Courtega, and Ngatirahiri at Asllhurst and Trentham, and Len piilieu will have the mounts on Grateful and Joy Box at Ashhurst. E: W. SaVage'i mounts at Trentham include Senior, Moquette, Miss Hushabye, Double Gift, Sansfoy, and Begorrah. . . ~
