UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
THE 4A SCHEME MEN ,
MORE GENEROSITY URGED

AUCKLAND, This Day.
Appealing for more generous treatment of men employed under the No. 4a scheme, Mr. W. A. Bishop, chairman of the Waitemata County Council, stated in a letter forwarded to the Minister of Employment today that, in his opinion, the men under this scheme had not been fairly treated in comparison with those on other forms of relief.
Men under the No. 4a scheme, Mr. Bishop explained, occupied small holdings on which they were supposed to work at least 40 hours a week. The weekly cash grant for a man and his wife under the scheme is 15s, whereas under the No. 5 scheme payment varied from 21s to 275, according to the district in which the worker lived. In addition, the No. 4a men received no issue of boots or blankets, as did other relief workers, no free milk, no bonus or holiday at Christmas, when all other relief workers were given a fortnight's holiday on full pay and an extra 2\ weeks' pay as bonus.
