(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WAIROA, This Day.
The "Wairoa Star" is reliably informed that exploratory work at Onepoto, Lake Waikaremoana, in connection with the' improvement of the hydro-electric scheme, employing upwards of a hundred men, was closed down last night by instructions from the Public Works Department, Wellington. No reason was ascertainable, but the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, was reticent concerning this undertaking when he recently visited the district, on which occasion he descended the shaft to inspect the class of country in which the work is being carried out. .
It is understood that the men who have been discharged have been offered work at Ruatahuna improving the lake road to Rotorua. This is the first job on which cessation of activities has been ordered by the new Government.
The information contained in the above message was confirmed by the Public Works Department. The reasons for the step, which was taken at the instruction of the Minister, who is at present on the West Coast of the South»lsland, were not ascertainable here today.
