WELL-DESERTED WIN

DILFASHION SH<i)WS FORM

The well-deserved success 6f ,the South Island trotting gelding - Dilfashion at Cambridge last Saturday introduced to the sire's winning list in Auckland the Australian-bred trotter First Fashion, who raced successfully in various parts of New Zealand over twelve years ago, writes "Abydos." : First Fashion was by All Style, a good sire whose sons and daughters are breeding on with marked success in Australia, from Myrtle Bells. He was imported to New Zealand by J. J, Kennerley, ,for whom he won several good handicaps at the New Zealand ; Metropolitan August Meeting in 1922.' He was one of four Australian horses to win a race on the first day of that meeting, the others'being Realm, Snowshoe,. and Weaver, who were brought to'the:meeting by the late W. J. Tomkinson. He ran second on the middle day, and with a fine effort scored again oa the last ,day.

Dilfashion has been a useful performer, but lacked the solidness of his sire. Three years ago he twice defeated Nicoya at Hokitika, giving Berkett's trotter, who later reached the highest class, 60 and 96 yards in a mile and a half and tyro miles respectively. ..." ' V• : V '• ',- '■■'~ .-.,,- .:

Dilfashion owed his success*,, in ,the Fencourt Handicap at Cambridge mainly to the good judgment of his driver, A. Bryce, who has been' . ih; charge of him since the Auckland Summer Meeting, where he missed his chances with bad breaks. On Saturday he trotted more solidly, but a*break near: the finish of the Farmers' Handicap just cost him the race/ In the two miles, however; Bryce gained a lead on the field at a point that gave Dilfashion his success at the end. It is possible that had Captain Bolt gone after, him a little earlier, he may have reversed the places. ■'■.:'■.
