"YOU ARE AN OLD MISER"

When Thomas Green, 76, a house owner, of Buxton Road, Edmonton, appeared before a North London Magistrate recently, on a remanded charge of begging at Seven Sisters Road, Holloway, P.C. Moore said he had found that Green owned a six-roomed house, which he bought seven years ago for £535. He let four rooms for 14s a week, and occupied the remaining two. He received an annuity of £4 a week from a step-sister, and- when arrested he had in his possession thirty-five £ 1 notes, one 10s note, 16s in silver, and 4s 2£d in bronze.

Green:' I am! very sorry, si. I assure you it will not occur again.'

The Magistrate: I strongly advise you not to let it occur again. You are an old miser, and you will be punished much more if I fine you than if I send you to prison. Pay £5.
