AMERICAN HIDES IN RESERVE.
. Weddel and Co., London,-November 7, reported that there had been some uncertainty of the U.S.A. Government's attitude towards the handling of drought cattle hides in store. "It must be remembered that close on 2,000,000 hides are still in store, but in cold store. • This means that they can be kept for a very long period without deteriorating, in the slightest degree. The Government nevertheless decided to commence liquidating some of these stocks. The effect was to weaken the market for light descriptions, of which .the drought hidesform the bulk. .The latest information is tliat probably the Government will not liquidate any more hides this year. The idea, of course/ is to do nothing to reduce the present .value of packers' current kill." ■
