AUSTRALIAN VICTORY

FINISH IN THE RAIN

TRANSVAAL MATCH

(Received December 11, 11 a.m.)

JOHANNESBURG, December 10.

Declaring at their overnight total of 411 for nine wickets, the Australian cricketers dismissed Transvaal for 247 and then hit off the runs necessary for a win, which was gained with ten wickets in hand. Heavy rain fell in the closing stages, but play proceeded until the winning runs were registered.

In their second innings the Transvaal batsmen opened cautiously against accurate bowling. Grimmett's first seven overs included five maidens. Rowan was brilliantly caught at short leg off O'Reilly .-Mitchell went along quietly but eventually he was tricked t>y Grimmett. Meanwhile Grierson had made a useful contribution.

Of the remaining batsmen Langton and Baines were the only ones to offer any real resistance. They provided ■ the day's brightest batting and sue- : ceeded in averting an innings defeat fbr their side.. Brown and Fingleton attacked the ' bowling fearlessly in fading light, and when 31 of the required runs had been made by the Australians rain, pelted down. Play continued in heavy rain, the fieldsmen and the batsmen hardly being able to keep their feet. The score mounted and then Nupen sportingly bowled a wide to the boundary, giving Australia a ten-wickets victory. Details:— TRANSVAAL. First innings 201 Second Innings. WORLD'S BEST BOWLERS

JOHANNESBURG, December 9.

The newspapers pay great tribute to the Australian slow-bowling attack. The "Rand Daily Mail" says:—"With O'Reilly and Grimmest it is a combination of finger spin, wristwork, dash, amazing mental concentration, and mechanical accuracy which puts them in advance of all other bowlers in the world today."
