A COURSE "WHISPER"
BETTING ON SERVIETTE
The amazing manner in which a racecourse "whisper" can affect betting was well exemplified in the Novice otakes at Feilding last week (writes "Hurry On"). In the Aorangi Trial 911 the opening day a Waverley horse in Erebus had made his opponents look very cheap, romping home by eight lengths. In the Novice on the second day another Waverley representative in Serviette figured among the starters.
Some "know-all" with a startling piece of alleged information set the report going that Serviette had beaten Erebus in their final trials. Many punters, some of them experienced racegoers, could not get to the totalisator quickly enough. Erebus's victory was still fresh in their minds, and if; Serviette was faster than the roan the race would only be a procession. Money rolled in for Serviette who' for a time was actually favourite. This had Mr. Tom Lupton, her ownertrainer, sorely puzzled until some friends conveyed the rumour to him. It then transpired that Erebus and Serviette had not even galloped together, so how the rumour started was a mystery to him and his own investment on Serviette was a very modest one. :
In the actual race Serviette showed a good turn of pace for 'half a mile,> but then faded out: She is a five-year-old mare by Kiosk from the Achilles mare Penthesilea, a mare bred by Mr. D. McLeod.
