PROMISING MAIDEN PAIR

The Blenheim trainer J. O. E. Jones made his first trip to the North Island since he set up as a public trainer when he took two of his charges. Contract and The Sandwich Man, to the Woodville Meeting. Neither horse reached near the money, but. both should be improved with the experience. Contract, who was formerly one of Mr. W. R. Kemball's horses but was purchased cheaply for 20 guineas by Mr. A. M. Davidson at a dispersal sale two years ago, has improved a lot in appearance since he was at Trentham as a two-year-old. It was unfortunate that no line could be obtained on his ability at Woodville, as, after refusing to go into the barrier, he was left so badly that he took no part in the race on the first day, and then, after behaving much better, he was skittled at the start on the second day. He is a chestnut gelding by Tea Tray from the Boniform mare Gardenia, a good winner and a half-sister to Gardant, Kilmoyler, and Mandy. The Sandwich Man, who had raced only once previously, performed more promisingly, as he was showing up near the front till the straight each day. He is a five-year-old bay gelding by Shambles from the Joculator mare Leicester Square, and he is held on lease by Mr. D. J. Gosling from his breeder, Miss N. B. Teschemaker. He is one who may go on improving, as Jones mentioned that, after a recent setback, he had been in actual work only a fortnight before undertaking the northern trip. Jones is remaining north with the pair for the Otaki Meeting, and he will return again with them for the holidays, when he will patronise the Wairarapa Meeting, arid possibly also the Taranaki. They will be accompanied on their next trip by a two-year-old Rabbi—Clicquot colt owned by Mr. C. O. T. Rutherford. This is a very promising youngster, though he may. not be ready for winning efforts till later on.
