CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
MR. C. J. S. PURDY ARRIVES
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
The chess champion of Australia, Mr. C. J. S. Purdy, arrived by the Niagara today. Referring to the New Zealand championship at Wellington during the Christmas holidays, he said he had noted that section play was to be eliminated for the first time in the Dominion championship. Trying out a new idea sometimes caused a temporary disturbance, but afterwards the system worked smoothly.
There was no sectional play in the Australian championship, entries being whittled down to fourteen by a process of elimination.- Each State nominated one player for the championship, and after that playing strength only was considered.
