CHEQUES STOLEN
THEFT FROM LETTER-BOX
The theft of two letters containing cheques from, a Wadestown letter-box was responsible for the appearance in the Magistrate's Court today of Malcolm Ross Kells, aged 22. He pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing two Treasury cheques for Bs, the property of Christina Jackson, on September 12, and was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment by Mr. E D. Mosley, S.M.
Detective-Sergeant L. B. Eevell said that Mrs. Jackson had been receiving 4s a week from the Labour Department. In September two letters containing cheques were found to be missing from the letter-box. Last month the accused was arrested in Hastings, and two memos. addressed to Mrs. Jackson were found in his possession. When seen by Detective W; Kane, the accused made a statement to the effect that he had stolen the two letters and cashed the cheques at Lower Hutt.
The detective-sergeant added that there were' quite a number of envelopes bearing Wadestown and Karori addresses found in the accused's possession, which would indicate that he had been stealing other letters. Last month the accused had been sentenced to two years' imprisonment for breaking and entering. Also he had quite a list of previous convictions.
