PAEKAKARIKI BRANCH

On Thursday last the first annual meeting of the Paekakariki sub-centre of the Red Cross was held in St. Peter's Hall, Paekakariki. The president, Mr. Brown, welcomed Mr. Galloway, the secretary of the Wellington centre, and thanked him for his courtesy in attending.

The annual report and balancesheet were read and discussed. Finances to the extent of nearly £30 had been handled, raised mainly by two donations from headquarters, being portions of grants received from the Macarthy Trust Fund and Returned Soldiers' Fund, private donations of money and proceeds of goods sold, street stalls, and community sings. Several sums were distributed for relief of distress throughout the year, besides donations to Health Camp, Soldiers' Association in lieu of "Poppy Day" collection, Indian Earthquake iund, and the entertainment, in part, of blind people, at a picnic and students passing through. A cupboard was built in St Peter's Hall, .with the permission of the hall committee, for storage of clothes and nursing equipment, and a table for use of district nurse, the marble top being kindly donated by a resident to the Red Cross of Paekakariki, at the local sub-centre's expense. R.eSr?t was expressed at the departure of Sister Hodder, who gave unsparingly of her valued services in instructing classes, both junior and senior, in first aid nursing. Clothing and eoods have been donated and distributed where needed. The thanks of the committee are due to the many willing helpers who have assisted in making the first year a satisfactory one. Mr. ualloway expressed his pleasure at being present and thanked the residents for hospitality extended him. He congratulated the committee on the healthy condition of its balance-sheet and outlined the work of the Red Cross Societies in New Zealand, and especially in Italy where the organisation has State support. The existing committee was re-elect-ed. Miss Paulniser (the district nurse) being welcomed and placed in the vacancy caused by the resignation of Sister Hodder.
