NELSON COLLEGE

NELSON, December 3,
In order to give pupils opportunities to, gain practical knowledge the boys in the Nelson College agricultural classes are from time to time taken to the country to inspect farms and factories, where lectures are given. During November they visited the Waimea Dairy Company's factory at Brightwater, . the Nelson Freezing Works on the occasion of the district fat lamb competitions, and at the A. and P. Association's show they acted as assistant stewards. In the Jersey judging competition for competitors under 21 years of age ihey won all the award's.
At the monthly meeting of the College Council- of Governors Mr. A. E. Max 'expressed the thanks of the A. and P. Association for the valuable assistance the boys had given and paid a tribute to their keenness and the efficient manner in which they carried out" the duties allotted to them.
It was reported that the Barnicoat essay prize this year had been won by Marie Fletcher, of the Girls' College, with W. A. Russell, of the Boys' College second. The subject taken, by both pupils was "Captain Eden."
The governors decided to forward an application to the Minister of Education in the new Government for the immediate reinstatement of the main college building.
■When Lord Bledislco . paid his farewell visit to' Nelson College the principal (Mr. H. V. Sea'rle) enlisted his help in securing for : the college a White Ensign from the Admiralty. This has now come to hand and will be presented to the school on the first suitable opportunity. It is appropriate that the ensign should.have come from H.M.S. Nelson.
