GENERAL ELECTION
CRUSHING BURDEN
TAXPAYERS SUFFER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) ELTHAM, This Day. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, Independent candidate for Egmont, opened his campaign at Okaiawa last night, addressing a well-attended meeting. The candidate severely condemned the present crushing burden of taxation, stating that the Dominion was the most heavily taxed country in the world, general and local government taxation amounting to almost £20 per. head. It was a miracle how the people had stood up to such a heavy punishment in face of the greatest depression the country had ever known.
New Zealand was a great exporting country and the present trade position with the United Kingdom was not satisfactory, and unless remedied it would become increasingly bad.
Two votes of thanks were unanimously carried—one for the candidate's successful advocacy of a New Zealand silver coinage and the other for "his splendid adddress."
