ROADSIDE FLOOD

BURST IN WATER-MAIN

A burst occurred last night in the 21-inch cast-iron main which brings supplies from Wainui to the city, at a point near Ngahauranga, and a flood of water welled up through the cycle track and spread over the macadam and the edge of the paved surface for some distance until the flow into the main was turned off. This morning the emergency repair crew was early in action and a new length was laid in place. The 21-inch main has been in use for about 40 years, and some few years back suggestions were made that it should be scrapped, as having fully deserved superannuation, but it will still carry on. It was laiji to the old Hutt Road alignment, and the old road was anything but straight, so that the pipe line is crossed and recrossed by the present roadway.

As there are two other mains along the Hutt Road, one from Wainui and the other from Orongorongo to the Karori reservoir, the break in the 21----inch main did not seriously upset the city supply.
