AN IMPROVEMENT

BUILDING SET BACK

For some eighteen months the Automobile Association (Wellington), Inc., has been agitating for the setting back of the fruit shop in Hataitai at the junction of Moxham Avenue and Taurima Street, which comes down from the Mount Victoria traffic tunnel. This work is now in hand and when completed should result in a considerable improvement and ensure greater safety.

The corner has always-been regarded as a dangerous one, there having been, as the chairman (Mr. E. A. Batt) has remarked, several accidents there and many narrow escapes. When Taurima Street was put through to connect Moxharri Avenue with the tunnel the end on the southern'side was cut back and rounded, giving a wide sweeping approach, but similar attention was not given to the corner on the other side. ' The particular piece of land is owned by the electricity department, and there is a shop on it occupied by a Chinese fruiterer. The shop front has been put back 16 feet from Moxham Avenue, and an overhanging piece on the Taurima Street side has been removed.

Motorists using this part of Hataitai frequently will be pleased that this work, which for so long has appeared to them essential, is being undertaken. When the job is completed visibility to the northern part of Moxham Avenue will be increased by aIG feet radius. The footpath at the corner has also to be set back to widen the road at this point.
