ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

THIS MORNING'S GALLOPS

NIGHTLASS MOVES NICELY

(By "Rangatira.")

There are only five Trentham horses among, the entries for the Marton and Wanganui Meetings next month, and training operations at the centre this morning were still quiet. The track, after the recent fine spell with drying winds, was the firmest it has„ been since the autumn, indeed the going on the grass was almost as fast as when the track is at its best.

Acceptable (A. Ridgway) and Nightlass (S. Wilson) were sent; half a mile together, and Nightlas^ drew out near the finish to win the trial by a good length in 50sec. It was the best gallop that Nightlass has shown since her resumption, and she should be capable of winning a maiden event early this season. She will probably be going to Wanganui if a division should not halve the stake. Acceptable is engaged, at both Marton and Wanganui, but his trip is not yet definite.

Cottesmore (G. Ridgway), who is to tackle his first middle-distance race at Marton, was stepped off from the seven furlongs, and, picking up Ayresleigh (Wilson) at the five furlongs, he came home well to be only a head behind his companion in lmin 29 4-ssec for the full distance, the last five taking lmin 4 2-ssec, and the last half-mile 51 2-ssec. It was a good performance by both horses, as Ayresleigh, who has raced only once yet, was always just a little in front of his seasoned mate over his shorter portion of the trip. There is still heat in Cottesmore's joint, which may trouble him when tracks become harder. •

Going Gay (Wilson) and Mowgli (F. Boxall), two horses from the George establishment who may go to Wanganui, were alloted six furlongs of three-quarter-pace work only.

Kia Tina (G. Ridgway) was soon clear of Arctic Star (J. K. Robertson) in their five furlongs, and after dropping back to a length lead a furlong from home she was going away a length and a half in front again at the post. The time for the distance, lmin 7sec, the last half-mils in 53 2-ssec, did not compare over-favourably with those recorded by the earlier gallopers, but Kia Tina is still a maiden, and Arctic Star can work setter.

Three two-year-olds, Siegmund (B. McCauley), the Backwood-Humorada filly (J. McCauley), and the VaalsRoselove colt (Wilson), were twice sprinted down the straight, all moving well. The Vaals colt is the most forward of them, but Siegmund is a smooth-aetioned colt who should gallop smartly later on. ,

C. Pritchard\ has turned out Pahu and Dollar Bill for spells. Pahu's holiday will probably be lengthy, but Dollar Bill will come in again in a month or six Weeks. Billy Boy is also having a rest, as there is no racing to suit him, and Verden is in enforced idleness owing to ~-joint he twice ricked in the south. Autopay is another . off the active list at present, as he is to have a short term at the stud during the coming month. The only Trentham horseman who will be attending the Combined Hunts Meeting at New Plymouth this week is S. Wilson, whose mounts on Thursday include Aussie Ra, Davistock Tahurangi, and Ngatirahiri.
