FRENCH PENSION CUTS

EXEMPTIONS ANNOUNCED

PARIS, July 21,

It is announced that civil and military pensions will not be reduced by 10 per cent., as was provided for in the recent economy decrees. *

At the demonstrations 1537 persons were arrested, of whom only eight were detained.

Despite the official ban, Civil servants attempted last Friday to hold a mass demonstration of protest against the reductions in their pay, but they were circumvented by 6000 mounted foot police, detachments of whom repeatedly charged, arresting 500 and restoring order early in the evening without grave incident. The encounters were never more than scuffles, the police buffeting the demonstrators with gloved hands, the demonstrators retaliating with . their fists.
