CATHOLIC DEFIANCE

LAWS FLOUTED

PRIESTS RISK PRISON

LONDON, July 21.

The "News-Chronicle's" Berlin correspondent says that the Roman Catholic Church has defied General Goering's statement that the Government will only allow priests to co-operate in education provided they unreservedly support Nazism.

Hundreds of priests are risking prison by reading, though secret police are present at many churches, an anti-Nazi declaration front the "Osservatore Romano" (the organ of the •Vatican), accusing the German authorities of infringing the concordat with Rome, and characterising as absurd the statement of Herr Frick, the Minister of the Interior, that Catholics must obey all laws.

The "Osservatore Romano" also protested against attacks on Catholic youth and Catholic workers' organisations.
