NATIONAL COUNCIL

A BUSY MEETING

A great deal of business was transacted at the monthly meeting of the National Council of Women (Wellington Branch) last evening, when the president (Mrs. M. H. Chatfield, J.P.) was in the chair.

The remits for the September Conference were considered,'these having been sent in from all branches of the council, and embracing a wide number of subjects concerning the welfare of the people. The majority were supported, and a few left to /the discretion of the delegates when the reasons for bringing them forward were explained.

A letter from Auckland concerning the Welfare Branch of the Education Department was read, also some remarks made in Hamilton on the same subject, and it was decided to hear more about the matter before any action is accepted.

A resolution from the Society for the Protection of Women and Children to the effect that the time was come when a woman J.P. should sit with the Magistrate when maintenance, separation, and affiliation cases were heard was endorsed by the meeting. It was explained that there were many times when the woman's point of view was not quite understood, and another woman would be of service in explaining points which a man, naturally, would not .see so clearly. Another resolution, concerning the recent case of destroyed evidence in a serious case, was held over to see what further action is taken by the authorities.

A letter was received congratulating the council on the excellence of its annual report, and the progress made during the year.

Mrs. Chisholm, Palm Grove, Berhampore, kindly put forward a scheme for a rather' original party for the benefit of the funds of the branch. This was accepted with pleasure and the member cordially thanked for her constructive suggestion. It was agreed to- give her all possible assistance. ,
