D. Mosley, S.M. Jewellery valued at £800 was stolen from the shop, and Jeffery is charged with stealing £500 worth of jewellery and £84 in money. The date of the receiving was alleged to be about May 28. Detective-Sergeant L. Revell said the accused was arrested yesterday by Detectives N. McPhee and S. C. Browne, and asked for a remand until July 31, when, he said, Jeffery would be appearing charged with stealing the jewellery. ■ The accused, through an interpreter, asked for bail. The Magistrate: He has been before the Court before? Detective-Sergeant Revell: He has; and I personally do not think it a case for bail, as the amount involved is so great. When I say we know him, we know him officially, but we don't know whether he will stay in' Wellington or what he will do. The Magistrate (to^ the interpreter): Tell him bail is refused. .The interpreter: He says he is well known to the police and surrendered himself yesterday, and that if he had intended to run away he would not have surrendered himselfBail was refused.
