SLIPS ON EAST COAST
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
GISBORNE, This Day.
The engine and trucks derailed yesterday near Otoko, when a train bound from- Motuhora to Gisborne struck a big slip, still block the line and it is unlikely the service will be restored until Friday. With the exception of two leading wheels, the whole bulk of the fortyton engine is off the line and tilted downhill. The removal of the trucks presents no difficulty but the engine is believed to be extensively damaged and it is now probable that the locomotive will be jacked off the line for attention later while service is restored.
The line is blocked elsewhere by heavy slips and a relief train from Gisborne has so far failed to reach the scene of the derailment though maintenance men are working there, having walked over the slips.
