HATAITAI ROADS
EESIDEXTS COMPLAIN
THE TUNNEL APPROACH
Requests that road and footpath improvements should be made in their district were made by a deputation representing the Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association which waited on the works committee of the City Council yesterday afternoon.
Mr. H. Boys spoke of the urgent need of sealing in Kainui Road and Te Anau and Kio Streets, where the surface was scoured out during stormy weather and from which dust and grit flew when the wind blew strongly, to the great, discomfort of those who lived in the houses on one side below the road level. Something had been done but it was not satisfactory. He stressed the need of a low-level footpath to serve Te Anau and Kio Roads, both for comfort and'safety. On three occasions, said Mr. Beys, he had had to pick up children , who had been blown over on the road, whereas if a low-level patn was formed they could go to school in safety. j
Mr. T. Woodcock said that the people on the lower side" of the road had to make their own access. They had been patient and long-suffering, but they did not want to use the road as a footpath always.
Mr. E. J. Lezard, president of the association, spoke of the approach to the tunnel from Moxham Avenue, urging that the projecting corner should be set back.
The chairman of the committee, Councillor W. Appleton. replied that provision for this work had been made in. the estimates and the corner would be cleaned up.
Mr. Lezard asked how soon the work would be done.
If the council approved of the item it would be done at once, replied Councillor Appleton, who also said that improvements were to be made in Ariki Street. There was some money for road-sealing this year and'he would see what could be done.
The new line of the premises at the tunnel corner,'said the chairman, would be the line of the shops to the north of the corner buildings. :The. carrying, out of this work, which had been pressed for ever since the tunnel was opened, would, he agreed, be a great improvement to Hataitai and would be welcomed by motorists.
