FIELDS IN REVIEW

The betting, as is now the standard order at Trentham, will be under the win:and-place system, supplemented with the barometer indicators. The racing will also be broadcast for the benefit of patrons. .

There will be the customary road and rail transport facilities to the course. Race trains leave Lambton Station at 8.47, 9.55, 10.10, 10.22, 10.35, 11.26 a.m., and 12.15 p.m., and oil Saturday there will be additional trains. A review of the form is as follows: — MARIRI STEEPLECHASE. The minor cross-country performers will open the meeting in the Mann Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, and because there is nothing outstanding among them the result may prove difficult to forecast, as opening events so often have been in the past at Trentham. The topweight, Cotsfield, may not be the favourite, because, though a fagt jumper, he does not stay too well, but he won at Wanganui and it was only Dozie who could beat him on the first day at Hastings, a race that got to the bottom of him for the time being, so his credentials look the best in this field. The comparative novices Diamond and Anemometer are a promising pair .who may trouble Cotsfield if they successfully manage the fences, and the recent southern winner Reminder attracted in the manner in which he jumped threu fences of the country on Saturday. Invictus will require to improve on his previous performances this whiter, but Taura Lad claims attention because he won the race last year and is now back on the minimum again. Taura Lad's mam hand is jumping ability, so the Trentham country will suit him better than what he has lately been tackling. Petrarch is a hunter with a chance. A favoured trio may be Cotsfield (both ways), and Diamond and Reminder (places). . WOBUKN HACK HANDICAP. "Possibilities bristle at all points of the long list for the Woburn Hack Handicap, but the winner seems likeliest to come from the higher division. Sunny Maid is so well as to.be a prospect despite her' weight, but there maybe some to whom she cannot concede so much as she has to in the scale. Among these is Grand ..Score, who is improving air the time.'and has previously won,at Trentham, besides 'which he executed a particularly pleasing gallop on Saturday morning. Solaria, on Ellerslie racing, must also rank among the real prospects, and Full Throttle, Dollar Bill, State Bank, Cay Boy, Collision, and Wahine Nui are aL horses whose recent form has been consistent, with the last three still apparently improving. Hunting Cat belongs to a line that has a fine Trentham record, and Isaacs, Brown Pearl, Gold Fox, McHeath, and Linguist are southerners of known ability or recent whining form. A horse who appears nicely in at his weight is Windward, and although there is nothing in his recent form he should be on the upgrade. Horses who will probably command notice are Grand Score (both ways), and Solaria and Sunny Maid or Wahine Nui (places). VITTOPJA HACK HURDLES. Outside of Adult, who won at Washdyke last month, there is no winning hurdling form in the Vittona Hac<c Hurdles, but three who have recently impressed as likely to take honours at the game before long are Salt Spray. King Thomond, and Hunting Jay, and they may be among the best supported. Master Musk, on his northern showings, especially his second to Stanchion on the middle day at Ellerslie, will have followers, but his jumping in his school on Saturday was very scratchy, and he is still a maiden at all departments. Semper Paratus, a cood winner on the flat this season, did not impress when previously tried over fences, but that was two years ago and he has undoubtedly had a lot. more practice since then, besides which he has decidedly more class than the rest oE the field. Most of the i remainder have done.little to commend them, but Kia Tina has been schooling brilliantly for a pure novice, and Swilt ana Sure indicated better ahead in his third at Dannevirke last week. One fee s inclined to rely °n the improvers. Salt Spray (both ways), and King Thomond and Hunting Jay (places). STEWARDS'HANDICAP. North and South Island form clashes without other line in the Stewards Handicap, and because of its numeious winning representatives the South may take the large end of the stake, as it did last year in this race. Rebel Chief, Sea Fox, Kamal Pasha, and Guarantee have all been winners at their last start, and as the weights . assess them accurately on their racing merits it is difficult 'to discriminate among them. Rebel Chief, a winner on the track last December, looked a shade light when doing his work on Saturday, but this may suit him. Sea Fox is clearly an improved sort. Kamal Pasha and Guarantee are also engaged ,in the mile. Water Power and Merry Peel, the latter looking well in, are a good proved pair on bad tracks. Among northerners ready for the southern attack the likeliest may be Refresher, Sunny Maid (if reserved), Astarm, Royal Bengal, and Hunting Lodge, with Orapai class enough, too, but requiring to do better than he did at Levin, which he may on the roomier track. The issue is open, but the southerners seem best, -with good performances promising from Sea Fox (both ways) and Rebel Chief and Guarantee or Kamal Pasha (places). WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE. With the exception of JJunmure, it *s only northern form that requires reduction in the Wellington Steeplechase, but the handicapper has set m-'-sstors a pretty task, and the issue may be claimed as. one of the most perplexing for several years. Royal Limond, as winner of the Gi;eat Northern, will have a big following, and he may be the final favourite, yet it is possible to envisage his missing a place, even with a stand-up, for several of the others are going to run powerful races. ;At the head of the handicap is Valpeen, who sandwiched a failure in the event last year between his Great Northern and Grand National wins. He seems to- have been too fit for his rider at Ellerslie last .month, but he has W. J. Bowden aboard now, and this may make a difference. One certainly could not but have been impressed by his muscular appearance \vhen he went out to do his school on Saturday. He looks a really good prospect for tomorrow, and if he is beaten it may beby another northerner in Haakon, who also js obviously very

fit and greatly fancied by those who know him best. Haakon, who did not start in the Great Northern, was altogether too good for his opposition on] the final day at Ellerslie. Then there is the consistent Riotous, another horse now at his best, but he may have just I his full portion of weight; The question mark is provided by Dunmure, who must be good on his southern performances and gains an advantage for not having patronised far-away Ellerslie. Billy Boy is not without a chance of adding his third success in the race, and Tudor, London, and Dozie are others to be respected. One reluctantly passes over Riotous and Royal Limond for Haakon (both ways) and Valpeen and Dunmure (places). TRENTHAM HURDLES. The Trentham Hurdles offers the best line for the more important Winter, Hurdles on the final day, but the dis-, tance may be just short for' some who will be among the Winter Hurdles I favourites, unless they go badly on the, two first days. Rasouli (last year's dual winner). High Grader, and Stanchion are all class hurdlers who will not lack for big followings, yet they may succumb to some of the lighter weights,' such as Revision, who looks as fit as'

ever she has been seen, and the consistent Esteem and Manawatu. If one of the topweights does win it may be High Grader, who is good over all distances. Another with a reputation is. Travelling Agent; *and if the track is j not too heavy Verden might play a successful part. It is a race in which everything has a chance, and if one had to be excepted it might be Hounslow. While conceding their justified prospects, to the topweights, one inclines to lean more towards such lighter weights as Revision (bothways) and Esteem and Manawatu (places). WHYTE HANDICAP. With a great array of form horses the Whyte Handicap.is going to prove no easy , picking, and it is not even clear what horse may be final favourite. In general fitness one could not go past' Croupier, who has lately easily beaten everything pitted against him on the tracks, and although he.: failed in recent races he may make atonement here. It is only a question of his seeing out the mile soundly to set the best of the others something to do to pull him back. Perhaps the favourite, however, will be Lord Val, winner of the Cornwall Handicap last month and a horse with a splendid Trentham record. Lord Val's recent work at Ellerslie has shown that he retains his form. Another who may be well backed is Curie, the winner two years ago, but it is doubtful if he is quite as good now as he was when he failed last year, though admittedly he comes in with 71b less, a substantial advantage at the position he occupies in the handicap. Two others who wilt be formidable contenders if ' reserved are Kamal Pasha and Guarantee, and Lapel looks' a good prospect from the middle of the handicap, for he can come on so solidly at the finish. Davolo, last year's winner, may need a race or two, but West Tor, though apparently assessed to his best, has to be considered because of his recent winning sequence. One cannot name all the possibilities, but 'Might, Horowhenua, Miladi (or Korero), . Miss Hushabye, Boudoir, Giggleswick, and Mercian Prince are others. The final reduction may be. made to Croupier (both ways) and Lord Val and Lapel (places). TE ABO HACK HANDICAP. The difficulties of investors will not end till after thg conclusion of the Te Aro Hack Handicap, which also offers many lines of choice. The topweight Royal Banquet is in great heart, but 10.0 may check his lengthy recent sequence, though even with this weight he is not without a chance, as he is a big horse. Better northern prospects, however, may be the consistent and solid Arctic Star, Lord Moutoa, Maine, Round Score, and Pukeko, though the last pair will have to improve on their Levin showings, a possibility on the roomier track. Against these horses arc some form southerners, and the south was successful with Vocal last year. Vocal is engaged again and recently returned to his winning ways. Rebel Lad is another steadily-improv-

ing southerner, with two recent wins, I and i£ Wino is reserved he will have support, though he may benefit with a race. Quite Soon has no recent form, but has won at Trentham. Sporting Song, Kurapae, and Sisterina have place possibilities about them. The final hoist may favour Arctic Star (both ways) and Rebel Lad and Lord Moutoa (places).
