NELSON BEATEN

MARLBOROUGH PLAY WELL

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

NELSON, July 6.

Marlborough avenged their defeat of a fortnight ago by beating Nelson by 19 points to 11 today, thereby regaining possession of the Cecil Shield. Throughout the first spell and during the first half of the second their forwards were superior, and gave the backs plenty of opportunities. Towards the end Nelson staged a re-: covery and reduced Maryborough's advantage by eight points in the last ten; minutes. . ■ , Weise finished off a bright Marlborough back movement to'open the* scoring, Nelson retaliating a few minutes later with a successful back attack from which Vass scored. Marlborough missed several opportunities through ofl-side play, but before half-time McDonald ended a forward rush with a try which Lane converted. Early in the second spell the fastbreaking Marlborough forwards profited from mistakes by the local side, Wilson, Botham, and Mcßryde scoring in quick succession. Lane converted one. In the last quarter of an hour Nelson set up a series of solid attacks. Vass scored a brilliant- try after a fine run and Morris converted. Within a few minutes of the end Morris landed a penalty goal. For Marlborough, Lane and Robinson were a clever pair of backs. McDonald and Lovell were the best forwards. Thompson and D. Max were Nelson's prominent forwards, and Morris, Busch, and Vass were the best of the backs.
