INDEPENDENCE DAY
AMERICAN CELEBRATIONS
DEATH-ROLL OF OVER 200
NEW YORK, July 4. Many lives were lost today when the United States celebrated the 159 th Independence Day. There were at least 201 deaths. Two were due to fireworks, 83 persons died as a result of motor accidents, 79 were drowned, and other accidents claimed 37. In New York, wheje it is against the law to explode fire-crackers, police vigilance kept the injured list to about 200, and fatalities to three, compared with the usual 2000 to 3000 injured. There was no official recognition of the day at Washington, where President Roosevelt spent a quiet day at the White House, but, as is customary, patriotic organisations held rallies in the principal cities.
