DUKE OF GLOUCESTER CUP

During the past week the title Duke of Gloucester Cup has been engraved on a large silver plate attached to the front of the plinth of the trophy presented to the N.Z. Racing Conference by H.R.H. Prince' Henry for annual competition among gentlemen riders, and three other similar plates have been added to the other sides of the plinth to carry the names of the winning horse, owner, and' rider each year. The cup has also been encased in a solid oak cabinet, and it will probably be displayed on the second and third days of the , Wellington Meeting next week. When "the competition is inaugurated at Marton next New Year the.trophy will pass into the possession or the winning owner for twelve months, and each succeeding. year the owner of the winning horse for. that year will have his turn of possession. The races are to be held alternately in the North and South Islands, at courses to be chosen by the Conference, each The executive committee of the Conference plans also to provide valuable miniatures of the Cup to be presented for permanent record to the successful owners and riders. Whenever the owner and rider are different two miniatures will be given. The proposed miniatures are about five inches high and they are exact replicas of the trophy, even to the coat of arms on the bowl of the cup. These miniature cups will undoubtedly become very much valued trophies, and it is probable that the annual race will develop into a notable event on the annual racing calendar in the Dominion.
