NEW CATHEDEAL

ST. MARKS SITE

The question of making a start with the building of a cathedral for Wellington was brought up at yesterday's sitting of the Anglican Synod, when the' Rev. N.- F. E. Robertshawe moved that a committee be appointed to consider the best method of observing the centenary of Wellington in 1940. The construction of a cathedral has long been looked forward to, and the necessary funds have been accumulating for many years. A site has been secured where St. Mark's Church now stands in the centre of the city. "We do not wish'to enter into an exttensive lot of repairs to St. Mark's Church and Sunday school—repairs which would run into thousands of pounds—if there is a chance of Wellington Cathedral being built on that site," said Mr. Robertshawe, who is vicar of St. Mark's. "If the cathedral is to be constructed on that site, it would mean taht the expenditure on St. Mark's Church and school would be wasted." It would, he said, be the duty of the committee to Consider the best method of observing the centenary of Wellington, and report to the next meeting of Synod. The members of the committee would be the Bishop of the Diocese, the Archdeacons, Canon James, Canon Woodward, Rev. E. J. Rich, Rev. N. F. E. Robertshawe, two church officers each from St. Paul's, St.' Peter's, and .St. Mark's parishes, Messrs. G. Shirtcliffe, E. F. Hadfield, and O. Monrad. The motion was carried without discussion. •

According to the Copenhagen newspaper "Politiken," Kiel is being once more converted into a fortress by Germany. Forts destroyed in 1920 under the Versailles Treaty are being rebuilt in a form compared with which the old forts were as toys.
