OVER THE COUNTRY

JUMPERS AT TRENTHAM

THIS MORNING'S TRIALS

I (By "Kangatira.") A number of horses from the north and south have appeared on the scene at Trentham during the last two days, and there was much more interest in the work of the Wellington-engaged candidates this morning. The weather, though not 'too promising for an hour after sunrise, was fine and mild, and the track, .as the result of drying .winds, was faster than it has been for several weeks.. The course proper looks in splendid order, and if it is not spoiled by a change in. the weather it will be in great racing condition next week. . . , The main interest was naturally centred in the jumpers, and there were three good bouts over four of the proper steeplechase fences (sod wall, two boarded fences, and a brush). The first to go were Pahu (M. H. Nicol), Ruby Meteor (A. Gilmer), Valpeen (W. J. Bowden), Spalpiko (R. Savage), Billy Boy (E. Burgess), and Haakon (D. J. Burgess), and they all jumped safely and for the main part without fault. Pahu and Ruby Meteor were first over the sod wall from Valpeen and Spalpiko, but Valpeen and Spalpiko had charge after the third fence, and Billy Boy then came up to | separate the pair for the last jump, which Pahu did. not take too well. Haakon started from behind, and remained there to take a good sight. of his. fences. Valpeen, who looks a picture of fitness, gave probably the most satisfying exhibition, but there was not much to choose among them. Haakon, who is also obviously very fit, a bigger horse than many .of his breed, jumped faultlessly, too, without trying to reach the other five. These horses were after given pacing tasks, and on pulling up Spalpiko was noticed to have struck himself, but the lameness did not look serious. While this school was on Diamond (R. Smith) and Reminder (J. C. Richards) began their bout, both jumping well, except that Diamond went high at the sod wall. Reminder did not tackle the brush. Royal Limond (D. O'Connor), High Speed (H. Turner), and Monastic (R. Drinkwater) followed next, with Royal Limond giving a very pleasing display. High Speed also jumped well, but Monastic ran down the fences, and finally balked at the brush. Royal Limond was a little tender when he first came out on the course, but it wore off when he was warmed up. Later Sir Musk (B. Sullivan) went out to do the country alone, but after scrambling over- the,,sod wall he ran j off at the other fences. He will- have to do better next week, but he may in company, as Okapua did after a similar exhibition two years ago, when he won both hack steeples. The first to school over the hurdles were Red Sun (C. Thomson) and Imasurvey (C. Burgess),.but they did not jump well, though Imasurvey improved at the last two fences. Kia Tina (W. Shand) was too fast for Travelling Agent (R. Thomson.) and Trishna (D. Bush) over five fences, and although she 'hit the last it was another attractive exhibition by this maiden, who has yet to make her race debut in the role. , King Thomond (W. J. Pascoe) jumped better than Master Musk (F. Thompson) over a similar bout. Master Musk was up with his mate for the last fence, but his jumping was very indifferent. • • Verden (E. Burgess) was sent over nine'fences, rapping some on the first round but jumping better on the second circuit. ; Some of the galloping on the trial grass was done while the schooling was on and it could not be noted. Among those to work at this time was Lord ■ Val, who looks in capital order. Acceptable ran an easy six furlongs in lmin 24sec. Lycidas did ,his last mile in lminfSTsac and was then warming to1 his work. Revision went well over a mile but was not timed. The best half-mile of the morning was recorded by Grand Score in beating Master Reynard by three lengths in'sosec, the fastest time on the track for the distance during the past month. Orapai finished half a length in front of Reipar at the end of six furlongs in lmin 19|sec, the last half-mile in 54sec, but from the time point it was not a good trial. . Ayresleigh came from behind to lead Copenna by half a length at the end of five furlongs in lmin 6 l-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. Debhain comfortably defeated Delysia and Gatecrasher over the same distance in lmin G^sec, the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec. Wahine Nui .was three lengths in front of' Blue Tiger after running the last half-mile of -five furlongs in 51 4-5 sec. Royal Gallant ran seven furlongs alone in lmin 36£ sec. A good trial was that in which Lapel beat Horowhenua by three lengths with Might a similar distance back over seven furlongs in lmin 32 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. Lapel did his work well, but Horowhenua may have been short of a gallop. Might, though closing at the end, was loafing over most of the trip. Croupier maintained his unbeaten record on the tracks recently by comfortably accounting for Rebel Chief over five furlongs in lmin ssec, the last half-mile.in 51 l-ssec. Croupier was always doing it easily. Rebel Chief, like many Riccarton horses, may be short of galloping, but he also appeared a little light, though this may be how he races best. Water Power beat Brown Pearl by [ a length over six furlongs in lmin 23 sec, the last half-mile in 55sec, but they were not extended. Korero and Miladi took lmin 8 2-ssec for five furlongs, but were doing their best work at the end. » After working, Prince Val was very sore Autopay was scratched from his first day's engagement at 10.20 a.m. yesterday Arouse was withdrawn at 10 a.m. today. The Ranger will not be started on the first day, and Transact is generally considered a doubtful contestant in the Steeples. . Additional riding engagements include P. Burgess on Tudor, S. Wilson on Sunny Maid, if started in the open sprint, or P. Atkins, if started in the hack sprint, P. McCauley on Sistenna, R. Savage on Lapel, and H. Long- on Grand Score and Miss Hushabye. Arrivals at Trentham yesterday, besides those referred to in the gallops, were Sea Fox, McHeath, Tooley Street, Vocal, Tybalt, London, Prince Acre, Astarth, and Rona Bay. Dunmure, who has lately been at.Washdyke, was expected on this morning's ferry, which arrived late, and others on board were Rasouli, Adult, Merry Peel, and Rebel Lad. Those due to cross tonight include Aladdin, Hounslow, Davolo, Colombo, Wino, Lord Argosy, Silver Sight (probably), and possibly Impossible.
