SOME "DARK HORSES

LEVIN NOVICE ASPIRANTS

In the field for the Maiden Stakes at Levin tomorrow are several horses who have done little or no previous racing, and although few of them may yet be ready lor threatening efforts it may be of/ some interest to consider their general credentials. Out of the seventeen horses engaged the only ones who are well known from racing are Happy Hunting, Popette, Even Money, Garter Red, Eka Tere, Kitty Quinn, and Hilton Gorse.

Apopo has had two previous' starts, and though she was running on sixth at Foxton she was a long way off. She is a five-year-old brown mare by Grand Knight from the Taitoko (son of Stepniak) mare Rewa Kewa, dam earlier of Hinewai, a winner, and she is being raced by Mr. J. M. Thomson and her trainer, F. J. Cannont, on lease, Carmont having received her as a gift from her breeder (Mr. A. Manguson). ■ .

1 Earl Colossus has raced four times ! without getting near the places, but he went a fine race at the Otaki Meeting earlier in the month and was finishing on at the close. He is a three-year-old bay gelding by Colossus from the Treadmill mare Treadwell; dam also of D'Acre, and he is being raced by his breeder, Mr. H. S. George, for whom A. M. Wright is training him. On appearance there may be much better in him than he has yet disclosed. Tupeotu has raced twice without glimpse of ability, but there is promising breeding about him. He is a three-year-old bay gelding by Potoa from the Absurd—Yes '■ mari- '.. ■

j Jest, so - that he is a full-brother to i Bold Bid and a half-brother to Merry | Way. ■ He is owned by Mr. A. J. Ryder and the Wanganui trainer W. H. Dwyer in partnership, who acquired him from | his. breeder, Mr. J. Gleesoh. Warehi had a couple of starts last I season, when he was owned by his breeder, Mr. L.E. B. Wallace, fr whom he has since been purchased by Mr. T. O'Rourke, of Otaki. He is a four-year-old brown gelding by Gainscourt from the Absurd—Hine Pango mare-Raukura, who won a number of races for Mr. L., A. Crawford a few years back. Royal King has already had about a dozen starts, and he rail a second at Otaki as a three-year-old, but he has been off the scene for a couple of years, because he was on the forfeit list when raced by a previous owner. He was removed from the list recently and has been since acquired on lease by Messrs^ J. Duggan and R. Bills, of Levin. He is a seven-year-old chestnut horse by Royal Divorce ' from the Merry Moment mare Musical Moment, and is thus a half-brother to Tupurangi: ' Manulele made her; debut at Foxton tills month, . when she was slow to begin. She is a four-year-old chestnut mare by Lackham from Goolwa, a mare by Strowan from a Dreadnought mare but-.who failed to win a race in a number of starts. She is owned and trained by Mr. D. W. Bowe, of Marotiri, near Foxton. Jeari Batten will be having her first start tomorrow, but she has been in work for some time." She is a three-year-old black filly by Colossus from the Provocation ;mare Great Effort, dam also of Holly; Holm and Land Tax, two useful horses, and she will carry the colours of her breeder, Mr. J. O'Donnell, of Bunnythorpe, who also races Land Tax.

False Witness may be noted because he was surprisingly well backed at the Otaki Meeting earlier in the month at his second appearance under silk. He is a three-year-old chestnut gelding, by Humbug from the Gasbag mare Yap, and he is owned by Mr. V. E. Bryant, of Foxton, who also raced Maui, Pheon, and Arikira.

There are also two unraced two-year-olds in the field. Pylon is a chestnut gelding by Colossus from the Polydamon—Melodise mare' Semplice, a full-sister to Agitato and Vivo, and he is owned by Mr. C. H. Moss, of Feilding, who' bought him from his breeder, Mrs, A. F. Lawrie. It was Mr. Moss who first produced Reipar a year, ago and sold him a little later on tt'Bis present owner. The other juvenile, Red Hunting, is a bay gelding by Hunting Song from the All Red—By-By mare Dodo, dam also .of Call Again and herself a half-sistei to that good horse Marqueteur and to Honey Bee and Celmisia. Red Hunting is to carry the colours of Messrs. W. Wilson and W- C. Whitfield, of Gisborne, the owners of Royal Lineage, who bought him from his breeder, the late Mr. G. Carrington.
