THE LEVIN MEETING

PRELUDE TO WELLINGTON

HORSES IN LIKELY FORM

The Levin Racing Club's Extra Meeting tomorrow comes in at an opportune time to provide some line to form for the Wellington Meeting opening on Tuesday week. That owners have appreciated the move is indicated by the excellent acceptances that have been received, and if the weather is fine overhead a completely successful day's sport is assured. After the rain that has fallen lately the track is certain to be soft, but this is the type of going that will also prevail at Tren:ham, unless an unexpected change comes over the weather and continues till the close of the Wellington Meeting. . , The club will operate its totalisator under the single-pool .system, with two , dividends in fields of five or more starters. ' • The following is a review of the form: — ■'' . ■ '■''.'■ (1.45. 51A1UEN STAKES, £70; about 6 furlongsApopo 810 Manulcla .... Happy Hunting, though she has not improved lately as expected, is overdue for her initial success, and she may have benefited from her recent change of quarters. Garter Red, Popette, Eka Tere, Even Money, Kitty Quinn, and Hilton Gorse are others who have shown some promise, and False Witness was surprisingly well' supported at Otaki, out , was left at the start. Two who ma.y play a prominent part are Happy Hunting and Garter Red: 12.25. . .'; ■■.'-. Gay Boy and Leprechaun also have form, but lik£ Solaria and Bodyline ,&re in later races,.though they might contest both, as Gay Boy did at foxton. Orapai has lately shown a return to winning form, but a pair whom he will find difficult to dispose of ■ with their concessions in weight are Cottesmore and Hunting Lodge, who have been winners since Orapai scored .at Te Rapa. Cottesmore won on the ■■■ track early in the month, and he is a good, horse when well, but Hunting Lodge is also an improved mare. Among the others Cawbeen, Royal Bengal, and Carfex may be most respected on recent form, though Gold Cure is not without a chance. There will be firm support for Cottesmore and Hunting Lodge.

The Grand Hack Cup promises to be a ■ well-contested race. Round Score ■won over the distance at Feilding at Easter, since when he has been off the scene, so it is possible' he will not be quite so well fancied as he would otherwise have been. Still he is liable to make a good show fresh, though he may find just too solid present opposition coming from the dual Otaki winner Arctic King, Manawatu, and .Tupurangi. The last-named has only to be ridden better than in her recent starts to take a lot of beating, for she can be brilliant in the mud. It is an open issue, but the likeliest on form ■may be Tupurangi and Arctic King (or Manawatu).

After his undefeated record to four starts oh the Nelson-Blenheim circuit Pukeko lapsed in a single appearance at Woodville, but with a rest since in which to, freshen up and with'lllb off his back he may be one of the toughest to settle in the Ihakafa Hack Handicap. Like hfci hall-brother Retract he does not mind the mud. Many of the others in the field have earlier engagements, but Solaria, Reipar, arid Gay Boy might do well here, and Lord Moutoa and Confiscation are. fresli horses with favourable prospects. A pair who may be in the money are Pukeko. and Lord Moutoa.

Unseen, Bodyline, Bazaine, i and Happy Hunting are others who will claim notice, depending in some cases on the showings they have made earlier m the day. As the field'stands | a likely pair read to be Grand Score and Bodyline (or Bazaine).
