A LAMB'S SWIM

OVER THE SERPENTINE

Mythology tells of a winged golden ram that flew to Hellespont, says the "Daily Mail." Now a two-weeks-old lamb has accomplished an equally un-heard-of feat by swimming across the Serpentine in Hyde Park. But whereas 'the golden ram sought to rescue' a princess • from the persecution of her. mother-in-law, the lamb embarked on its adventure to escape from its mother.

The lamb, with the mother, arrived in Hyde Park a few days before, and since, owing to the.rigours of a train journey, the ewe was unable to walk, the couple were left on the boathouse side of the Serpentine while the Hyde Park shepherd,' Mr.- G. H. Case, penned up the rest of the flock on the opposite -bank.' ■. . ■ ■ Mr. Case then returned for the ewe and started to carry it, while the lamb trotted behind.

He had just reached the boathouse when the ■ flock on the opposite side began to bleat.; Apparently the lamb decided to take a short cut to its playmates and plunged into the water.-

Members of the. Serpentine Ail-the-Year-Rouhd Bathing Club watched its progress anxiously, and a boat from the Royal Humane Society's boathouse put out to the: rescue, but the little creature-arrived, safely on the opposite bank, unperturbed by the 200----yards swim.

"It is very rare for a sheep to swim," said Mr.: Case to a "Daily Mail" reporter. "At the most they only cover a few yards when they are dipped in a stream. .

"I have never known such a young lamb to try'it before."
