WESTERN HUTT ROAD
WORK ON NEW SECTION
OTHER RELIEF JOBS
Good progress continues to be made with work on the Western Hutt Road. The total number of men engaged on the road is at present about 400—the biggest number to date. The total has been swelled since men have been put off the borough maintenance jobs. About 150 men are working on the new section beyond the Hay wards Station leading to the bridge site. High cuttings and solid rock are being encountered here, but the material from this work will come in useful later on. Between Haywards and Melling between 200 and 250 men are at work relining the road.
The Horokiwi Road job has been completed and handed back to the Makara County Council. The road was widened only to the top of the hill so as to give better access to the farms. This road continues on to Newlands, but beyond the specially widened portion it is not in a good state of repair.
About 200 men are still working on the Wainui side of the Wainui Hill. Widening and metalling are in progress, and the main portion of this should take about another month to six weeks. The size of the gang is being reduced all the time. When it came to trimming the road it was not found practicable to do this by task work, so a number of men were put on to the old system, but the policy of the Public Works Department remains the same with regard to task work.
Unemployed men are still at work at Gracefield raising the Crown land. Crown land is being cleared of gorse at Normandale by means of unemployed labour.
