RECORDED IN WELLINGTON

The earthquake in Baluchistan was recorded on the seismograph at the Dominion Observatory. The record commenced at 9.25 a.m. yesterday and the seismograph was in continuous motion for about two hours, indicating a severe earthquake some distance away. The shocks varied in intensity. The record was not particularly pronounced, but this could not be expected when the epicentre of the disturbance was such a long way away. The explanation of the long-drawn-out record is that the waves travel at different speeds, and the further they get away from the epicentre the more they spread out. The seismograph at the observatory also recorded another earthquake at 9.24 yesterday morning, but this was of a local nature and not connected with the earthquake in Baluchistan. The tremor was sufficiently, strong to be felt by some people.
