"HER DUE PLACE"
GOVERNMENT OF INDIA
DOMINION STATUS
LONDON, May 30.
In the House of Commons Labour members on the final day of discussion on the report stage of the Government of India Bill demanded the categorical affirmation of Dominion status in the preamble.
Lord Inskip, Attorney-General, in reply pointed out that instructions to the Viceroy laid down as the goal of India's attainment "her due place among the Dominions." Conditions in India were not quite the same as in the other Dominions. Her external affairs could not be provided for in the same way, but by taking advantage of the powers and responsibilities under the Bill she would attain her due and proper place.
The amendment was defeated by 176 votes to 37.
