BACK TO STEAM

The Royal Mail liner Alcantara (22,181 tons) returned to Southampton recently after an absence of five months. During that time she had been converted from Diesel to steam propulsion to secure additional speed for the South American service, on which competition is keen. The reengining process was carried out at Belfast by Messrs. Harland and Wolff, Ltd., her builders, and necessitated the entire reconstruction of her bow. As a result, her length has been increased by about two feet, and her two funnels have been lengthened. Other improvements include a new tennis' court and the remodelling and refurnishing of many of the cabins. On trials, the Alcantara did not go full out. It was intended that she should merely demonstrate her ability to attain the designed speed of 18J knots on a stated oil consumption and horsepower. She actually returned 19.1 knots, and then had a reserve of several thousand horse-power. She left Southampton on her first voyage under steam to South America on May 4.
