WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

NEWLANOS

A meeting of the Newlands Women's Institute was held recently, but owing to the bad weather the attendance was not so good as usual. A most interesting demonstration of a well-known machine and various uses of attachments was very much appreciated by those present.

A competition for "best apple tart" was won by Mrs. Woods, Mrs. Kettlewell being second. One for "bestdarned sock" was won by Miss Liddle, with Mrs. Watkins second. The choosing of a delegate to attend the Auckland conference was postponed till next meeting.

A two minutes' silence was observed during the progress of the meeting in respect to the memory of the late Mrs. Lawton, who died recently.

The hostesses, Mesdames Tunley, Watkins, and Bowman, served afternoon tea, and the afternoon closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
