ACCOUNTANCY
CALL FOR SPECIAL STUDIES
"Apart from the material welfare of members, the advancement of accduntancy as a learned profession is an ideal to which we all should aim, states the New Zealand "Accountants Journal," editorially. "During the past few years the business world has witnessed many changes, and every day brings some new- development which may have permanent effects upon the future of the accountancy profession. Those with vision consider that out of the whirlpool of experimentation will i emerge an accountancy somewhat dif'ferent from that to which we have 'been accustomed. Individually, many of us may. not approve of some of the theories which are being promulgated, but we cannot overlook the fact that there is a growing feeling that a change is necessary. The trouble is that attempts are being made to regulate and to regiment trade and industry with a thoroughness and a lack of knowledge which are full of jeopardy for the country. We have but little doubt that many of these wild ideas will, in due course, be discarded and that ultimately wisdom and common sense will prevail. "In the meantime a heavy responsibility is cast on the shoulers of the accountancy profession, whose members are expected not only to give a lead to the community on matters of private and public finance, . but to provide the machinery to give effect to the reforms which the experience .of the future may dictate. Our colleagues in Great Britain are fully alive to this trend of affairs and the post-graduate course attended by so many accountants at Cambridge last year is merely symptomatic of what is proceeding apace. Many grave _ problems face the world today and in the final solution of our difficulties we predict that the services of the accountant will be called upon to an extent which was not even dreamed of a decade ago. The best possible education of our future members is, therefore, of paramount importance^"
