The completion of the road to Milford Sound at the earliest possible date was urged' by the deputation, which also stressed the desirability of having the proposed tunnel at the approach to the sound made sufficiently wide ~ to permit of two-way traffic. Attention was also drawn to the necessity for a survey of the coast i» the vicinity of Milford,- the deputation suggesting .that lit should be one of the earliest works ! carried out by the Marine Depart- ! ment, which was arranging for various 'parts of the .New Zealand coast to be charted in the near future, The necessity for providing a lighthouse at the entrance to the sound was also brought forward: ' , The Minister stated that, he was in- ] terested to know that the Chamber of! Commerce was so wholehearted with respect to the construction of the road to Milford. The question of the size of the tunnel had recently been under consideration, and it was his opinion, and also that of the Public Works Department, • that the tunnel should be one capable of carrying two-way traffic. He appreciated ,the necessity for the provision of a. light at the entrance to the sound, and had already made representations to the Minister of Marine on this point. '. He would place, also before the Minister of Marine the representations made to him regarding the* charting of the coastline.
