"LIKES HIS FREEDOM"

BUT IS SENT TO PRISON

An old man whom the police stated preferred to roam the streets than to stay in a home appeared before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today on a charge of being an idle and' disorderly person with insufficient lawful means of support. He was August Henry Metz, aged 69, and the Magistrate sentenced him to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. Although Metz pleaded not guilty to the charge, Constable H. R. Rush said in evidence that he came.to the police station yesterday afternoon and asked to be sent to Porirua as he was going mad. Since his discharge from prison he had been hanging round the streets, and he had no means of support or anyone to look after him. He would not stay in the Salvation Army Home or the Ohiro Home.

"He won't stay in a decent home. He likes his freedom about the streets," remarked Sub-Inspector C. E. Roach.

"The home didn't suit me; they would not give me a towel," said Metz to the Magistrate. "You compel me to send you to a place that probably won't suit you quite as well," replied the Magistrate. "We can't allow you to wander about the streets."
