light to moderate south-easterly winds, later turning to north-easterly.

The general forecast is for moderate south-easterlies at first nor^h of Westport and Kaikoura, backing gradually to east and north-east; elsewhere freshening north-east to north winds. Some scattered rain is likely on the east coast between, Castlepoint.:. and :East Cape, but elsewhere, the'.weather7 is likely to be mainly fair and . mild, but becoming unsettled tomorrow in the western districts of the South Island.
An anticyclone is now centred east of the South Island, while pressure has remained relatively low in the far north, and a depression now covers the western Tasman Sea. Strong southeasterly winds have blown at times about Cook Strait, ' and southerly breezes have predominated; but in the far north and also in the southern half of the South Island directions have been rather variable. Scattered showers or. misty rain have occurred on the east coast north of Banks Peninsula and in the Cook Strait area, but elsewhere the'weather has been mainly fair to. fine during the past twentyfour hours, cold temperatures ruling. . At Auckland yesterday the weather was fine though cloudy at times, with a cold north-east wind. This morning the weather was fine and clear.
Light rain fell in the early morning at Wellington yesterday, and it was a cloudy day with a moderate to fresh south-east wind blowing.' A few showers fell after midnight, a heavy one occurring at 12.30 ajn.\ At 9 a.m. today the weather was fine, with a light east-south-east wind. The rainfall for the twenty-four hours was three points. In Christchurch the morning was dull but the afternoon fine and clear. A light southerly wind, prevailed. Between 8 ajn. and 9 ajn. today drizzling rain was falling and the wind was a light north-westerly. : ,- ■• "Fine, clear weather, with a light northerly wind, has prevailed in Dunedin.
