The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop), referring to the letter, said it was either a question of voting the money now1 or recommending the incoming' council ;to do it. His own view was •that they should give a sum of £250.

Councillor P. Fraser, M.P.: I. want to-move .£SOO.

The Mayor said that it was just a question- of whether there was authority to do that.

Councillor Fraser said that they would have to get the authority. Everyone, he continued, must approve of the Government's action in deciding to contribute £5000 .to the fund as a Jubilee gift. The money subscribed would bemused in New Zealand for research work, and'it was possible that New Zealanders mignt value an important contribution in this connection from which the world at large would benefit.5 The Capital' City, he thought, should give a sum worthy of it. The Mayor" said he "would accept the suggestion that £'500 be voted, and he would move that if' any validation was required the necessary steps be taken. Councillor W; Appletdn raised the question of whether it-would .not be better for an outgoing council to make ■a recommendation.

The Mayor said there was a special reason-for action being taken now. ■ It ,was desired that the council should give a lead.

Councillor Fraser: In ordinary circumstances I think the council would unanimously support Councillor Appleton, r

It did not matter what council was in .'office after May 8, said Councillor R. Semple, M.P. it would readily agree to the contribution being made. ,In the ordinary course of events it would be quite wrong to commit a new' council to any sum.

Without further discussion, it was decided to make the council's contribu'tioh £500.
